stencil concrete

CCS Stencilpave is a decorative concrete system that incorporates CCS Colour Hardener with CCS Paper Stencil over new, wet concrete.

Preparation

Place, screed and float concrete (in accordance with good concrete practice).

Once the concrete has been prepared, roll out a sufficient length of CCS Stencil to reach from one side of the concrete surface to the other. Cut from the main roll with a pair of scissors and place it on the surface of the slab. Anchor it to the slab by trowelling each end. If necessary lift the stencil and arrange it so that it is lying straight.

Application

Use a bull float to float in stencil so that it lies flat on the slab. It is not necessary to force the stencil into the slab, you only need to trowel it so the stencil is lying flat.

Roll out another length of stencil and lay it so that the edge of the stencil is on top of the first stencil. Cut the stencil to length and anchor it to the slab as above.

Line up each stencil by lying the outside edge on top of the previously laid stencil. Ensure that the grout lines or mortar joints are arranged in the required manner – randomly or offset – depending on what is required.

Application of Colour Hardener

Apply the CCS Colour Hardener in an even manner over the slab. A maximum of one bag for every 10m² applied in three applications – 60% on the first application, 30% on the second application and the remaining 10% for touching up any grey areas that may remain.

The colour hardener should completely cover the surface.

When applying colour hardener, avoid throwing it in clumps. The best method is to apply it by moving the hand in a parallel plane to the surface of the slab.

Allow the moisture from the slab to be absorbed by the colour hardener. As the colour hardener absorbs the water, it will gradually darken.

After the first coat of CCS Colour Hardener powder has absorbed the moisture from the slab beneath it, trowel into the slab using a bull float.

A second application (approximately 30% of the total amount) should then be applied to cover any remaining grey areas where the first coat missed.

Once the moisture has been absorbed by this application, trowel it into the slab using a steel trowel.

Antique Effect

There are two methods for creating a contrasting ‘antique’ colour effect. A second colour can be either applied in a dry or liquid form.

Dry Method Antique Effect

A contrasting darker CCS Colour Hardener should be applied in a controlled manner to approximately 10-15% of the area of the slab.

When applying this colour, avoid throwing it in ‘clumps’ as this may give an unnatural finish to the job.

Attempt to apply the CCS Colour Hardener so that it has an appearance that builds to an obvious presence but then fades away again over the space of one or two metres. This ‘antique’ is then melded into the slab using a textured roller. The textured roller creates a non-slip rustic finish to the job.

Wet Method Antique Effect

Liquefy a small amount of CCS Colour Hardener and then flick it onto the surface by hand or brush.

Lifting the Stencil

When there is no excess surface moisture present, you can remove the stencils.

Removal of the stencils is done with two workers on either end of the stencil. Pull up the end of the stencil and then slowly lift. It is best to start from the stencil that is on top ie. at the end of the job and work backwards.

Clean Up

When the slab is sufficiently dry to take a persons weight without damaging it, blow any bits of dried topping that fell from the stencils off the slab.

Sealing CCS Stencilpave

Apply CCS Same Day Sealer to freshly laid concrete once concrete has cured enough to be walked on by the contractor (CCS Same Day Sealer should be applied the same day the concrete is placed). This product is best applied using a low – pressure sprayer

Following the application of CCS Same Day Sealer, the surface should be sealed after a minimum of three to seven days with one undiluted coat of CCS Hardseal Advance, CCS Hi Build Enduro or CCS Hardseal Matt.

Note: If CCS Same Day Sealer is not used, the concrete should be allowed to cure for a minimum of seven days before applying two coats of CCS Hardseal Advance, CCS Hi Build Enduro or CCS Hardseal Matt. The first coat of sealer should be diluted with CCS Solvent.

Clean up

Wash all equipment thoroughly in CCS Solvent and allow to dry.

Curing time

Curing time depends on the temperature. The sealer is usually touch dry in 20 minutes at 25°Celsius. The concrete can usually be walked on after 24 hours. Allow seven days before parking on the coating sealers.
